FREEWAYS:

Caltrans allows several types of adoptions of freeway borders, including Wildflower planting, weed removal, and our favorite, Spot Wildflower Adoptions.

If you or your neighborhood live next to a freeway, especially a raised freeway with a soundwall, you can apply for permission, access and even tools to beautify your neighborhood. Click Here for more information.

MTA TRAIN ROUTES:

The MTA is currently starting meetings to obtain input on the Expo Line, Phase 2. It will run from Culver City to Santa Monica. Attend a meeting or give your thoughts in writing to the MTA to encourage more than just "routine" landscaping.

Meetings: 2/27/07 at Culver City Sr. Center and 2/28/07 at Hamilton High School. Two more meetings will be held in March 2007.

BOULEVARDS:

The mayor's Million Trees Project is in full swing. If you see an empty planter bed on a street or boulevard, call it in and ask for a tree to be planted there.

CREEKS AND RIVERS:

Ballona Creek

Recent projects:
May 14, 2007:
Location: NE corner of Overland Ave. at Ballona Creek. Culver City
What: Planted native plants next to the bike path.
Plants included: Lemonade Berry, Monkey Flower, Coffeeberry, CA sage.
Who: About 40 6th grade students from Community Harvest Magnet School (Jon Pearson, teacher), along with the County of LA Public Works Dept., with support from Supervisor Burke.
After the kids went back to school around noon, Public Works installed a drip irrigation system on solar powered automatic timers.
Notes: This is at least the 2nd year in a row this school/teacher has done a native planting project. Last year they planted a couple of hundred yards in from the shore. This time they were further inland. They made the 6pm Channel 4 (NBC) news this year!
Oh, according to a neighbor, within a week a truck ran over the project. Repairs have been promised.
Organizations to contact: Ballona Creek Renaissance (aka BCR)

LA River: This section is under construction. Check back soon!
