Gardening has never been more popular at our local schools. Teachers, parents, administrators, and politicians are starting to realize the many beneficial aspects of gardening: exercise, nutrition, and science, among others.
Though the desire is there, many people are confused as to how to best initiate and integrate gardening into the schools. In the past, most schools had one inspired person who learned and did everything from scratch. Here, our goal is to make it as easy as possible for schools in the greater Los Angeles area to learn from these early pioneers.
Here we provide information on how to obtain a school garden (money, permission, design ideas, etc.), and how to best utilize an existing garden (what to plant, when, how to tie in to classroom curriculum, people to help, online resources).
We hope to eventually create a bulletin board or blog where school gardeners can ask questions, share experiences, create "wish lists", and more.
Our goal: Every local freeway, MTA train route, boulevard and street should be made as scenic as possible. Why? Because this is our "home," and people's homes should be attractive. They should make us feel better. We should enjoy spending time in them.
Other parts of the country have scenic roadways. We can too!
Want more "concrete" (pardon the pun) reasons?
- Higher land values
- Less urban runoff (rainwater) to handle
- Less urban heating (from reflection off concrete)
- More jobs for local landscapers/gardeners
- Tourism money (city reputation & beauty)
- Fewer surfaces to graffiti
...and more.
